Ray's Race speeds through Honolulu The Running Psychologists, an interest group within Div. 47 (Exercise and Sport), hosted Ray's Race, its yearly five-kilometer fun run, in Kapiolani Park on Honolulu's Waikiki Beach during APA's 2004 Annual Convention. Now in its 26th consecutive year, Ray's Race--formerly the APA Rat Race--is named in honor of former APA CEO and Running Psychologists founder Raymond Fowler, PhD. This year's race, held at 7 a.m. on July 31, featured 250 runners and walkers racing one and three-quarters loops around the park. Tyler Nugent, an undergraduate student at Pacific Lutheran University, led the three fastest men, who all finished in fewer than 18 minutes, while high school student Nici Thomas led the top three women to times under 22 minutes. The participants ranged in age from 10-year-old Brendan Corvan, who placed second in the under 25-years-old group, to 83-year-old Bill McKeachie, PhD, who finished second in the over 75 group. Ray Fowler--wearing his usual No. 1 jersey--also raced well. Among the many psychologists and others who organized Ray's Race were Running Psychologists Past-president Frank Webbe, PhD, Secretary-Treasurer Suanne Shockett, PhD, who managed the budget and registration, race director Raul Boca, who gave instructions to runners, and APA Division Services Coordinator Keith Cooke, who supervised on-site registration. APA Div. 47, the APA Insurance Trust and Psi Chi provided financial support. Worth Publishers, Virtual Brands videos, author Ayala Pines, PhD, Pietro's Restaurant and Boca Race Management donated more than 50 prizes. T-shirts and awards will be mailed to those who did not receive them on-site. The next Ray's Race will be held Aug. 20 during APA's 2005 Annual Convention in Washington, D.C., Aug. 1821. --M.
