For the new Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes to work as intended, psychologists need to get involved, symposium presenters emphasized. That means you need to:
Spread the word. "Once the codes roll out, it's going to be like flipping a switch on Dec. 31," said Randy Phelps, PhD, deputy executive director of the APA Practice Directorate. "Let your colleagues and your office staff know now that this is going to happen."
Apprise APA of problems. It's likely that many insurers either won't fully understand the changes when they take effect Jan. 1, or won't be technically ready to handle them, said Diane Pedulla, director of regulatory affairs in the Practice Directorate. As a consequence, "Let us know which carriers aren't reimbursing properly, so we can assist you in getting the proper information to them," she said.
