Prepare for survey of five-year PhDs

If you earned your PhD in psychology in 1996, 1997 or 1998, you may soon be asked to participate in a national survey focused on job search, work/life choices and dilemmas, and doctoral-program evaluation.

The Ford Foundation-funded "Survey on Behavioral and Social Science PhDs--Five Years Out" examines, in addition to psychology, the areas of anthropology, business, communication, geography, history and political science.

Invitations to participate in the survey will be sent out by January. If you receive one, APA's Research Office urges you to complete it.

The information gathered will guide doctoral program re-assessment efforts in psychology and other fields across the country. It will provide needed data on career decisions among PhDs and data that can be used in advocacy efforts in support of PhD education and careers.

The survey is administered by the Center for Innovation and Research in Graduate Education (CIRGE), located at the University of Washington. APA's Research Office (http://research.apa.org) is collaborating with CIRGE to tailor items and survey content to psychologists.
