Sport division reaches out to Honolulu athletes
Print version: page 26

APA's Div. 47 (Exercise and Sport) hosted its second annual "Give sport psychology away-athon" at APA's 2004 Annual Convention in Honolulu. Through the program, sport psychologists attending the convention offered free sport psychology services, including workshops and lectures, to local athletes, coaches, exercisers and other sports groups as a way to "give back to the convention city," says Div. 47 President Judy Van Raalte, PhD.

One highlight was a team mental preparation workshop by Dan Gould, PhD, for the swim team and diving team coaches at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and organized by faculty member Claudio R. Nigg, PhD. Another was a presentation on maximizing performance that Roland Carlstedt, PhD, gave to 30 local tennis players at the Central Oahu Regional Park Tennis Complex.

Other presenters included:

* Britt Brewer, PhD, of Springfield College, who held a workshop for a local running club.

* Emily Claspell, EdD, of Honolulu, who worked with local paddlers on pre-race routines and training strategies at the city's Outrigger Canoe Club.

* Jessica Mohler, one of the division's student representatives, who spoke to coaches from the Waikiki Yacht Club Junior Sailing program.

The division is planning an even larger event for APA's 2005 Annual Convention in Washington, D.C. Check the division's Web site at www.apa47.org for updates.
