Dr. Michael Fanselow of the University of California, Los Angeles, presented research that demonstrates the role of the hippocampus in turning Pavlovian-style anxiety conditioning into contextual fear memories at APA's 2004 Annual Convention in Honolulu. Invited to speak by APA Divs. 3 (Experimental) and 6 (Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative), he discussed the ongoing work of his lab, which aims to sort out exactly how fear memories are stored in the brain and how they are translated into specific behavior patterns.
