Division spotlight Students: Take advantage of Div. 1 benefits Div. 1 (Society for General Psychology) is seeking to boost its student membership. In 2007, American Psychological Association of Graduate Students members can join free of charge by contacting Chairperson Matt Goodwin, via e-mail. The division is also seeking student posters for its first-ever students-only poster session, to be held at APAs 2007 Annual Convention in San Francisco, Aug. 17–20. The session will focus on Psychology across specialty areas or nations. Students abstracts will also be published in the Societys journal, The General Psychologist in 2007. Div. 6 (Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology) seeks submissions for the following awards: The D.O. Hebb Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award, which honors a psychologist who has made distinguished theoretical or empirical contributions to basic research in behavioral neuroscience and/or comparative psychology. The recipient presents a lecture at APAs 2007 Annual Convention in San Francisco, Aug. 17–20. The recipient does not have to be a Div. 6 member. The Clifford T. Morgan Distinguished Service to Div. 6 Award, which recognizes members of Div. 6 who have made sustained and exceptional contributions to the division. The Brenda A. Milner Award, which recognizes the author of an outstanding paper in the field of behavioral neuroscience or comparative psychology, either published or in press. The author must be a Div. 6 member who is within five years of having received a doctoral degree at the submissions deadline. Although the paper may be co-authored, the applicant should be the senior author and the paper must represent the original work of the applicant. The paper must be in press or have been published within the last five years. Candidates may apply for Div. 6 membership at the time of nomination. Nominations for this award should include the name and institutional affiliation of the nominee, plus a 150- to 300-word statement explaining why the nominee is deserving of the award, and nominations should be sent to the awards chair. The Frank A. Beach Comparative Psychology Award which recognizes the best paper published in Journal of Comparative Psychology each year. The D.G. Marquis Behavioral Neuroscience Award, which recognizes the best paper published in Behavioral Neuroscience each year. Nominations for all awards are due Feb. 1. Div. 10 seeks member-interest feedback Div. 10 (Society for the Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity and the Arts) is soliciting information from Div. 10 members about their primary interests in research and practice. The division will use the information to inform its planning for the 2007 Annual Convention in San Francisco, Aug. 17–20. Send comments to Lauren S. Div. 15 announces 2007 convention programming The 2007 APA Annual Convention program theme for Div. 15 (Educational) will be Reaching Educators Through Educational Psychology. The program will include an invited address by Grover Russ Whitehurst, PhD, the director of the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) in the U.S. Department of Education. Whitehurst will provide a retrospective of how the work of IES has affected the work of educational psychologists and education in general. The program will also include a speech by the recipient of the E.L. Thorndike Award for Career Achievement in Educational Psychology and a graduate student luncheon. Divs. 17 and 35 invite comments on practice guidelines Divs. 17 (Society of Counseling Psychology) and 35 (Society for the Psychology of Women), have developed proposed guidelines for psychological practice with girls and women. All interested APA members are invited to offer comment on the draft guidelines, which are available at www.apa.org/about/division/guide.html. The guidelines have been through two rounds of review with APA Boards and Committees and have been reviewed by APA legal counsel. APA Association Rule 30-8 mandates notification of all divisions and state, provincial and territorial psychological associations of guidelines in progress with a 90-day comment period prior to consideration by the Council of Representatives. A notice announcing the availability of the draft guidelines was placed on the APA Web site and sent to divisions and state/provincial/territorial psychological associations on Aug. 1. Div. 43 (Family) and the Association for Women in Psychology also participated in the draft guidelines; APAs Board of Directors and the Committee on Division/APA Relations provided additional financial support. Attend criminal justice psychology conference The Criminal Justice Section of Div. 18 (Psychologists in Public Service) will co-sponsor the North American Correctional and Criminal Justice Psychology Conference, in Ottawa, Ontario, from June 7–9. The meeting will feature distinguished speakers from England, Canada and the United States, and will be of interest to both scholars and practitioners interested in criminal justice. Participate in the International Congress of Psychology and Law Div. 41 (American Psychology-Law Society) is co-sponsoring the third annual International Congress of Psychology and Law in Adelaide, Australia, July 3–8. The meeting will examine interdisciplinary issues within the health, justice and correctional systems that affect both lawyers and psychologists, such as legal and court issues, expert witness testimony and offender assessment and treatment. The annual meeting attracts a wide range of professionals and scholars with an interest in forensics. Div. 42 (Psychologists in Independent Practice) has created a Health Care for the Whole Person Task Force that aims to provide practitioners with assistance in enhancing their practices by building collaborative relationships with other professionals, especially physicians. The task force members include psychologists and physicians, and members are working on establishing connections with other health-care groups as well. Members are reviewing projects such as developing tips for practitioners on creating collaborative professional partnerships; education modules and toolkits for practitioners for referrals and consultations; and public education efforts to highlight the mind-body connection and APA resources. Div. 46 honors NPR science journalist In July, Div. 46 (Media) presented its 2006 News Media Recognition Award to Michelle Trudeau, the contributing science correspondent for National Public Radio. The award honors excellence in the reporting of psychological information and research. Michelle Trudeaus long track record of radio programs devoted to human behavior, child development, brain research and mental health provides an excellent service in keeping the public informed about important psychological developments to benefit their well-being, says Elizabeth Carll, PhD, former Div. 46 president and chair of the News Media, Public Education, Public Policy Committee, which developed the award.
