APA President Sharon Stephens Brehm, PhD, presented 10 presidential citations at the Opening Session of APA’s 2007 Annual Convention. The awards recognize psychologists’ extraordinary achievements or innovation in areas such as service, leadership and research. The honorees were:

•  Joseph D. Matarazzo, PhD, and Ruth G. Matarazzo, PhD, who were honored for their longtime service to psychology education and training.

•  Jeff Greenberg, PhD, Tom Pyszczynski, PhD, and Sheldon Solomon, PhD, who were honored for their development of a terror management theory that focuses on the roles of self-esteem and cultural belief systems in providing protection against the human fear of death.

•  Mahzarin R. Banaji, PhD, who was honored for her research on interaction between social prejudices and unconscious beliefs and thoughts.

•  Claude M. Steele, PhD, who was honored for his groundbreaking research on stereotypes and performance.

•  Anthony G. Greenwald, PhD, who was honored for his contributions to social psychology as a researcher and mentor.

•  Saul M. Kassin, PhD, who was honored for his research on false confessions, which has led to changes in laws and policies on police interrogations and freed many who were wrongfully convicted of crimes.

•  Gary L. Wells, PhD, who was honored for his research on eyewitness identifications, which has helped produce practical and effective methods for reducing eyewitness errors.
