APA honors genetic testing researcher

For touting psychology's critical role in genetic testing, Andrea F. Patenaude, PhD, received a Presidential Citation from APA President Richard M. Suinn, PhD, at the Council of Representatives meeting at APA's Annual Convention in Boston. As chair of APA's Advisory Council on Genetic Issues, Patenaude has raised awareness among physicians, genetic counselors and psychologists of the benefits of psychologists' work to help people decide whether to seek genetic testing. She has also advocated for including genetics education in psychologists' doctoral training.

"She and the members of the Advisory Council have helped us understand that the field of genetics and genetic testing will provide new roles for psychologists in the very near future, and that we must seriously consider ways to ensure that psychologists are prepared to assume this challenge," said Suinn.

Patenaude is director of psycho-oncology research at the Dana - Farber Cancer Institute and an assistant professor of psychology in the department of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
