How to get involved on the state level

Michael Sullivan, PhD, assistant executive director of state advocacy at APA, says psychologists can boost their involvement in state advocacy in several ways:

* Join a state association; they are psychology's voice in the state capitals.

* Sign up for legislative days or grassroots networks where psychologists are urged to send e-mails, write letters to or call legislators, or make in-person visits to representatives.

* Become active on a state legislative committee or task force.

* Work on state legislators' campaigns.

* Run for public office.

'Keep on keepin' on' is the mantra for state legislative efforts
