Div. 31 news

Div. 31 (State Psychological Association Affairs) has several new developments to report:

The division is working to update its bylaws to allow "provinces" in the division's title and to serve territories as part of its mission.

In collaboration with Div. 42 (Independent Practice), the division continues to enhance its bureau of speaker presentations at meetings as a resource to state and provincial psychological associations.

The division's diversity task force has been networking with APA's Office of Ethnic Minority Affairs and the Committee of State Leaders to provide continuing support for minority fellows brought to APA's Annual State Leadership Conference.

Div. 42 helps members reach out to their communities

The Public Relations and Public Education Task Force of Div. 42 (Independent Practice) is in its fifth year of issuing monthly topical pitch letters and public service announcements (PSAs) to more than 300 radio stations and 300 newspapers nationally.

Topics include shyness, marital relationships, alcoholism, stalking, parenting, grandparenting, depression, anxiety, breast cancer and holiday blues. The letters and announcements are aimed at informing the public that talking with a psychologist will help with everyday problems.

The division encourages its members to tailor the letters and PSAs for their own use to promote their practices in their communities.

"Psychologists in all interest areas will do our profession and the public a wonderful service by sharing our knowledge with the public," says Elaine Rodino, PhD, Div. 42 past-president and chair of APA's Public Relations and Public Education Task Force. "The more the public understands about psychology, the more they will be supportive of psychology in every way--through legislation, community mental health projects, research and independent practice."
