APA presidential election Dr. Larry E. Beutler Print version: page 69
* How would you work to increase diversity of APA council, states' leadership and division leadership?
In order to increase representation in APA governance, we must both increase the diversity of those entering psychology and ensure that APA is identified as a primary reference group for underrepresented individuals. I favor:
* Expanding the Metropolitan University Scholars Experience program to include a "Psychology Scholars" component for undergraduate minority students.
* Instituting procedures for ensuring cultural competence in our training programs, our research agendas, our curricula and our practices.
* Initiating a formal dialogue that will include members from underrepresented groups to discuss and then propose mechanisms for instituting a mentors program for APA leadership.
* Government officials and bodies, as well as the general citizenry, need to become more aware and appreciative of the contributions of psychology as a science and practice to their ongoing activities, as well as of our contributions to the promotion of health, education and human welfare. How would you use the media to achieve that goal?
APA's successful public information campaign should be broadened, first to inform the public of the roles that psychologists play in science, public policy, education and normal development, and secondly to target special groups. Additionally, teams of psychologists representing law, business, mental health and research, each working with psychologist legislators, can establish a network by which to introduce local and federal agencies to the manifold ways in which psychological knowledge may be useful. Institution/political leaders can be provided with special, informational materials addressed to questions and timely issues of the day (terrorism, violence, human resources, work with disenfranchised groups, etc.). |
