* How would you work to increase diversity of APA council, states' leadership and division leadership?

The primary task for increasing diversity is to bring more ethnic-minority students into the graduate schools and into the field of psychology. APA should provide strategies for state associations to reach out to high school and college students with programs to encourage graduate education in psychology. The divisions and states with more than one representative to the Council of Representatives should designate ethnic-minority slates for at least one of the positions. Incentives could be given to the units for developing the slates, such as added reimbursement for expenses or program time at the convention.

* Government officials and bodies, as well as the general citizenry, need to become more aware and appreciative of the contributions of psychology as a science and practice to their ongoing activities, as well as of our contributions to the promotion of health, education and human welfare. How would you use the media to achieve that goal?

The Public Affairs Office should have the resources to increase the preparation of media press releases with information from articles in journals. In addition,I would work to promote a National Psychology Day, during which all psychologists would provide some pro bono service in the community, such as screening for depression and anxiety, consultation to public mental health facilities and nursing homes, visits to elementary and high schools to discuss the fields of psychology, and other similar activities. If successful and if governments make the day an official yearly event, it would be an important educational occasion for psychology.
