• What role will science play in your agenda for the year that you are president of APA?

Science is the bedrock of our discipline. The advancement of psychological science and its many applications is fundamental to the mission of APA every year. Consistent with that mission, I will propose the development of a new think tank as a partnership among psychologists with expertise in science, education and practice, in order to address targeted societal problems and to influence public policy. Also, I fully support the PSY21 initiative, science advocacy and lobbying for behavioral science grants, the new science strategic communications plan and our scientific publishing program. As always, science will infuse and inform our daily activities.

• What steps would you take to ensure the success of the annual convention during your presidential tenure?

Our annual convention should be vibrant, affordable, scholarly and stimulating to the diverse membership under our big tent. It is a tall order! I will recruit world-class speakers, support attendance of graduate students and early-career professionals, offer family-friendly programming, showcase interdisciplinary and international work, encourage more business of practice programming, and provide a welcome format for smaller specialty interests. Toronto is a colorful and enjoyable city for our 2009 convention. Join with me and let's make the meeting an unforgettable experience for all who want to come, learn, network and grow.
