APA PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Candidates state their views:
Dr. Frankie Y. Wong

Print version: page 60

• What role will science play in your agenda for the year that you are president of APA?

Science will play a central role in my agenda. I can't imagine a psychologist for whom science could be other than central. I think it's critical to our future to keep APA close to its roots as a scientific organization.

I will work tirelessly to protect the integrity of peer-reviewed research. When my own research was caught in a political undertow, APA cast a lifeline. I want to serve as APA president to ensure that the support I received will be available to researchers in similar circumstances and to foster an environment in which such support will become unnecessary.

• What steps would you take to ensure the success of the annual convention during your presidential tenure?

Most broadly, I will promote a focus on the core aspects of our practice, research, training and policy. I hear no calls for less substance. While in Toronto, I will take every opportunity to partner with the Canadian Psychological Association to develop a shared global psychological agenda. This would be a limited first step toward true global collaborations. I will organize programming that emphasizes multi- and interdisciplinary collaborations, both to support those already engaged in interdisciplinary work and to point the way to unexplored directions.
