VOLUME 30, NUMBER 8 September 1999

Psychology Defense Fund covers wide field

The Psychology Defense Fund (PDF) isn't just for clinicians in their confidentiality battles against insurers or government.

Since its inception 20 years ago, the fund has paid out $835,000 to educators and scientists, too, providing a wide range of support for legislative and legal activities which focus on recognition of psychology as a science and profession.

PDF supports such issues as:

  • Animal research/welfare.

  • Legal, ethical and legislative projects of state associations.

  • Psychologists' rights to practice in hospital settings.

  • Litigation involving disclosure of records in cases involving school psychologists.

  • Anti-trust action which won psychologists the right to be admitted without discrimination to psychoanalytic training institutes.

PDF provides seed money to help defray costs for cases deemed worthy of support. Normally, PDF funding doesn't exceed $10,000, due to limited resources.
