APA Clinician’s Corner: Professional Issues in the Information Age

The APA Office of Continuing Education in Psychology’s (CEP) is now webcasting its Clinician’s Corner workshops nationally on a live basis! These 3-hour workshops feature leading practitioners and scholars working in key areas of professional practice. All workshops include CE credits and will be held at the APA Building, 750 First St. NE, Washington, D.C. or online through a live webcast.

The Internet, social media and other technological changes have offered new ethical challenges for psychologists. Using case examples, discussion and lecture, participants in this workshop will consider how the ethical code relates to issues of social media and the Internet. Special emphasis will be placed on developing professionals’ understanding of decision-making processes used in arriving at ethical courses of action in the context of technological change. The workshop will highlight issues informed consent, confidentiality, and boundaries/multiple relationships. Using case studies and vignettes, professionals will be invited to consider what might be the best course of action in a variety of scenarios presenting ethical dilemmas.
This workshop is designed to help you:
Recognize the variety of new ethical challenges related to the Internet and social media;
comprehend the specific issues of informed consent, confidentiality and boundaries/multiple relationships as they apply to the internet and social media; and
identify and explain a practical model for ethical decision-making related to the technological issues.

About the presenter: Dr. Jeff Ashby is a professor in the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services at Georgia State University. He is the director of Georgia State’s Counseling Psychology doctoral program, a licensed psychologist and a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology. Dr. Ashby has taught ethics at the graduate level for over 15 years and has served as chair of the Ethics Committee of the International Association of Play Therapy and as an ethics content expert with the State of Georgia Psychology board. He has made over 100 presentations at professional conferences and authored/co-authored over 60 articles in refereed journals, numerous book chapters and two books.
