Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?

The APA Board for the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest (BAPPI) and the Public Interest Directorate are pleased to sponsor a pre-screening of excerpts of the upcoming four hour PBS series “Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?”
The series is being produced by California Newsreel with Vital Pictures and is presented by the National Minority Consortia of Public Television Impact Campaign in association with the Health Policy Institute.
The series will seek to bring to the public’s attention the alarming socio-economic and racial disparities in health and search for their root causes. During this session, sponsored by BAPPI and the Public Interest Directorate, excerpts of the upcoming series will be screened followed by a conversation and discussion session with one of its producers, Larry Adelman of California Newsreel along with presenters Troy Duster, PhD and Nancy Adler, PhD. The session will be chaired by Margaret B. Heldring, PhD, Chair of BAPPI and President of America’s Health Together. This session is a part of the BAPPI sponsored series of programming entitled The Psychological and Health Impacts of Social Injustice.
Through this series of programs, BAPPI and the Public Interest Directorate are seeking to explore the impact of social injustice on public interest constituencies; how social injustice plays out across these different groups; and identify and discuss positive impacts of social justice.
This series is co-sponsored by the APA Committee on Aging (CONA), the APA Committee on Children, Youth and Families, (CYF), the APA Committee on Ethnic Minority Affairs (CEMA), the APA Committee on Disability Issues in Psychology (CDIP), the APA Committee on Women and Psychology (CWP) and Divisions 27, 45, 51, and 9.
