On Friday, September 28, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee sponsored a briefing on children’s mental health and juvenile justice issues as part of the reauthorization of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) legislation. APA was one of four organizations invited to present to the committee staff on this important issue.

APA member Dewey Cornell, Ph.D. (Clinical psychologist and Professor of Education at the University of Virginia and Director of the Virginia Youth Violence Project) represented the Association at this event.

In his presentation, Dr. Cornell discussed the fears versus facts of school violence and gave several key very compelling recommendations for improving the Safe Schools/Healthy Students program.
