Biography of Timothy Elliott

Timothy ElliottTimothy Elliott is a Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology in the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M University. He joined the TAMU faculty in the summer of 2006.  He is the Training Director for the APA-approved Counseling Psychology doctoral program at TAMU.  

He obtained his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1987. After his internship at the Seattle Veterans Administration Medical Center in Seattle, WA, he served on faculty with the Department of Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University.  He has also been a faculty member with the School of Medicine and with the Department of Psychology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.   

His research has examined adjustment processes among persons living with chronic and disabling health conditions, with particular emphasis on the role of social problem-solving abilities in adjustment. This work has resulted in over 200 professional publications and continued federal funding for 15 years (including support for five randomized clinical trials). He was co-editor of the first edition of the Handbook of Rehabilitation Psychology (2000). His current work has focused on the development and study of problem-solving interventions for family caregivers of persons with severe disabilities. In 2006, he was featured in the instructional DVD entitled, Caregiving, as part of the Psychotherapy Video/DVD Series on Relationships published by American Psychological Association.

Currently, he serves as Editor for Rehabilitation Psychology, published by the American Psychological Association, and he is the incoming Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Psychology. Previously, he served as an Associate Editor for Rehabilitation Psychology, the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, and the Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings. He is a Fellow of three APA divisions and holds board certification (ABPP) in rehabilitation psychology. He has received several awards and honors.

Tim and Nancy – married for 30 years as of August, 2009 – live in College Station, Texas. Nancy is an artist, works in a local gallery, and she actively promotes the arts throughout the Brazos Valley. Their daughters Natalie (age 26) and Victoria (age 21) are busy with their own editorial and artistic pursuits in Little Rock and Austin, respectively.
