Medicare Local Medical Review Policies Project

The APA Committee on Aging (CONA) and Office on Aging have embarked on the Local Medical Review Policy Project to work toward increasing the availability and coverage of psychological services for older adults under Medicare.

Local Medical Review Policies (LMRPs), developed by insurance carriers that serve as Medicare intermediaries, set forth general provisions for acceptance or rejection of Medicare claims. The report, An Overview of Medicare Coverage for Psychological Services for Patients with Diagnoses of Dementia or Alzheimer's Disease, is the first step of the LMRP Project to analyze existing LMRPs for Psychiatric and Psychological Services.

Effective January 2001, The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) required that all intermediaries for Medicare establish an open and public process for the development of their LMRPs. In addition, recently promulgated provisions of LMRPs for Psychiatry/Psychological Services in NY, CT and MN have opened the door for an organized approach by psychologists to assist in good decision-making about Medicare policy regarding older adults. A tool kit is now available to assist in these efforts.

Existing and draft LMRPs for individual Medicare insurance carriers can be found via the CMS website, http://www.lmrp.net/ . Visitors need to scroll down to "their web site" and then search individual carrier web sites for LMRPs.
