APA’s Public Interest Government Relations Office (PI-GRO) Continues to Advance Association Priorities for National Health Care Reform

Along with legislation to address energy and climate change issues, Health Care Reform (HCR) dominates the domestic policy landscape.  PI-GRO continues to provide key leadership on issues and activities related to this critical federal initiative.

Milestone Reached with Introduction of LGBT Health Disparities Legislation

On June 23, 2009, an important landmark was reached in health advocacy for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals, with the introduction of H.R. 3001, the Ending Health Disparities for LGBT Americans Act (EHDLA).


APA Takes Lead Role in Developing Congressional Resolution Introduced on African American Youth Resilience

PI-GRO staff worked diligently to secure the introduction of a House resolution based on the work of APA's Task Force on Resilience and Strength in Black Children and Adolescents.


APA Urges Congress to Strengthen Outreach to Military Service Members and Veterans

In Congressional testimony delivered May 19, APA member Jeffrey Pollard, PhD, ABPP spoke about the importance of outreach and quality in mental and behavioral health services offered to military members and veterans on college campuses.


PI-GRO Provides Critical Input on Reauthorization of Child Abuse Law, Contributes to Provisions Addressing Adoption

In preparation for the reauthorization of the federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), PI-GRO sent recommendations to the Senate HELP Committee, most of which were incorporated into an early draft of the legislation.



APA Urges Caution in FDA Consideration of Psychotropic Drugs for Minors

In a June 9 public statement, APA urged an FDA panel to proceed with caution in considering applications by Astra Zeneca, Eli Lilly, and Pfizer to approve the atypical antipsychotic medications Seroquel, Zyprexa, and Geodon, respectively, for the treatment of childhood mental disorders.


Congressional Briefing Emphasizes the Benefits of Workplace Flexibility

PI-GRO played a lead coordinating role in organizing a May 20 briefing for congressional staff that addressed the benefits of workplace flexibility and work-life balance.


Obama Signs Homelessness Legislation into Law

In May, the President signed into law a bill that addresses issues faced by families experiencing homelessness.  PI-GRO worked to ensure that the legislation addressed the impact of homelessness on mental health.


New Leadership for Push to End Military "Don't Ask, Don’t Tell" Policy

PI-GRO continues to advance the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don’t Tell," which has a new lead champion in the House of Representatives. 


Critical Children's Mental Health Legislation Reintroduced

PI-GRO has been integrally involved in the reintroduction and championing of children's mental health legislation during the 111th Congress.
