Senate Finance Committee Health Care Bill Reflects APA Priorities

In October, the Senate Finance Committee concluded work on its version of health care reform (HCR) legislation. The bill reported by the committee included many critical HCR priorities sought by the Public Interest Government Relations Office (PI-GRO) and other Directorates.

Years of Advocacy Bring Leap Forward in Hate Crimes Law

After ten years of strong advocacy efforts by APA and other groups, the federal government enacted legislation in October that revises federal hate crimes statute, including a crucial expansion of the definition of hate crime.


APA Leads Efforts to Ensure HCR Addresses Health Disparities

PI-GRO coordinated a number of recent activities to ensure that Congress gives maximum consideration to critical health and health care disparities issues during HCR debate.


APA Promotes Eldercare Workforce Issues in HCR

As part of ongoing activities related to policies that impact older adults and those who care for them, PI-GRO worked with the Eldercare Workforce Alliance on a coordinated campaign to raise awareness of these issues in HCR.


APA Presidential Task Force on Homelessness Takes Up Advocacy, Stakeholder Engagement

PI-GRO has been actively engaged in advocacy activities with APA President James Bray’s Task Force on Psychology’s Role in Ending Homelessness.

APA Testifies Before Senate Indian Affairs Committee

In September, APA member Dolores Subia BigFoot, PhD, presented testimony on behalf of APA on the imperative of addressing suicide among American Indian and Alaska Native youth.


PI-GRO Continues to Advance Workplace Flexibility with Series of Congressional Briefings

PI-GRO played a lead coordinating role in organizing two briefings on October 23 and November 6 for staff of the House and Senate on flexible work arrangements.


APA Members Participate in Congressional Black Caucus Veterans Braintrust

PI-GRO coordinated the participation of expert APA member Kristin Lester, PhD, at the Annual Legislative Conference of the Congressional Black Caucus.


APA Supports Critical Legislation on Employment Protection, Disseminates Marriage Equality and LGBT Health Materials

PI-GRO continues to work toward enactment of employment discrimination protections for sexual orientation and gender identity, including the Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2009.
