2009 Survey

Space adjuster section divider

In Spring 2009, the APA Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Concerns Office conducted a survey of chairpersons of graduate programs in psychology to gather information about graduate faculty in psychology interested in lesbian, gay, bisexual, & transgender issues.

About the Survey

Surveys were sent to the chairpersons of graduate programs in psychology and associated fields. The programs surveyed were those contained in the database of graduate programs maintained by the APA Center for Workforce Studies for the purpose of publishing Faculty Salaries in Graduate Departments of Psychology. Included in the database are (1) the programs listed in Graduate Study in Psychology (published by APA to assist graduate program applicants), (2) all full and associate members of the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology, and (3) those departments in associated fields that have a strong emphasis in psychology. At the time of the survey, the database contained 755 programs in Canada and the United States.

The 2009 questionnaire asked whether any faculty members were conducting research or had sponsored theses or dissertations related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues. It also asked whether a program previously offered courses or planned to offer future courses focusing on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues. Additionally, the questionnaire inquired as to whether any faculty members focused on training and supervision for providing professional psychological services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender clients or communities, and whether the program has established relationships with local agencies that offer supervised experience working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender clients or communities. Finally, the questionnaire asked a series of questions about the climate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender faculty and students at a particular institution.

The questionnaire used in the survey was sent to the chairs of the programs in March 2009. Email reminders were sent to nonrespondents between March and May 2009. One hundred and sixty-nine programs (22%) returned the questionnaire, 125 (74%) returned completed surveys, 44 (26%) returned partially complete surveys.

Only programs answering "Yes" to at least one question in a given table are included in that table. A program missing from these tables may have answered "No" to the questions or may not have returned the questionnaire at all.

The results of the survey are posted in four sections:
