for 'National Conversation on Racism' Events

APA members wishing to join the National Conversation on Racism are invited to hold a screening of an award-winning documentary on an aspect of racism in America. Members may choose from among six videos. Each of the titles are being made available by California Newsreel free of charge for public National Conversation Events.

Skin Deep (53 minutes; Facilitator Guide included). Selected for screening at the APA Mini- Convention, Skin Deep follows a diverse group of college students as they awkwardly but honestly reveal their prejudices, bare their wounds, and try to understand one another. The students eventually confront the deep-seated barriers to creating a campus atmosphere which respects diversity yet promotes community.

Blue Eyed (85 minutes; Facilitator Guide include). Jane Elliot has been conducting anti-racism workshops for almost 30 years since she first developed her 'blue-eyed/brown-eyed' exercise in 1968. (Originally featured in the film 'Eye of the Storm'.) In Blue-Eyed we're given the chance to observe and evaluates her controversial theories in action.

Ethnic Notions (58 minutes). Marlon Riggs' Emmy-winning film traces the origins of the deeply- rooted stereotypes which have fueled 150 years of anti-black prejudices. Specific stereotypes and their cultural manifestations are situated historically, showing how each reflects - and shapes - evolving white attitudes and fears.

Black Is.....Black Ain't (86 minutes; Facilitator Guide included). Marlon Riggs' poignant last testament dives right into the middle of struggles over black identity, challenging notions of racial essentialism. Riggs identifies and confronts patriarchy, sexism, homophobia, cultural nationalism and other forces which would reduce and contain the lives and experiences of African Americans.

A Question of Color (57 minutes). Kathe Sandler's pioneering exploration of 'colorism' - the cast system based on how closely skin color, hair texture, and physiognomy conform to a European ideal - confronts the disturbing feelings of many African Americans harbor about themselves and their appearance.

Blacks and Jews (85 minutes). The rift between these two traditional allies is a symbol of America's growing racial divide. This important new file goes behind the headlines, anger and emotion, initiating a frank yet constructive dialogue.

Screenings of these videos, especially when followed by symposia or discussions, can help educate the public about the dynamics and cost of racism.
