Call For SCP Leadership Fellow applicants: Council of National Psychological Associations for the Advancement of Ethnic Minority Interests (CNPAAEMI) Leadership Development Institute – July 2013
In collaboration with the Society of Counseling Psychology (SCP, Division 17 of the American Psychological Association), the Council of National Psychological Associations for the Advancement of Ethnic Minority Interests (CNPAAEMI) is sponsoring a yearlong, interorganizational Leadership Development Institute (LDI). CNPAAEMI consists of the following national associations: Asian American Psychological Association, Association of Black Psychologists, National Latina/o Psychological Association, Society of Indian Psychologists, and the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues – Division 45 of the American Psychological Association. The LDI is funded by the CNPAAEMI organizations, Division 17, and APA’s Commission on Ethnic Minority Recruitment, Retention and Training in Psychology.
The CNPAAEMI Leadership Development Institute (LDI) aims to:
Create a mechanism for identifying and/or attracting racially and ethnically diverse psychologists and mental health professionals to become active participants in CNPAAEMI and its respective organizations;
Foster and support culturally grounded leadership skills among psychologists and mental health professionals that are transferable to multiple settings (e.g., families, work settings, professional organizations, neighborhoods communities, etc.);
Establish networking and sustainable coaching and mentoring opportunities to nurture ongoing leadership development; and
Develop a model of multiracial and multiethnic coalition building to promote inter-organizational collaborations.
We invite racial and ethnic minority early career psychologists (seven years or less since doctorate) who are interested in and committed to leadership in the Society of Counseling Psychology to apply for the LDI. The LDI is designed for early career professionals who are interested in leadership but have not yet held leadership positions in the SCP.
One leadership fellow will be selected from each participating CNPAAEMI organization to create a cohort that will meet, train and work together for the entire year. Each fellow will also be working with a mentor from their sponsoring organization as well as a mentor from another CNPAAEMI organization to expose them to multiple organizational and leadership perspectives. The SCP fellow will receive a $600 stipend to offset travel expenses.
Components of the Leadership Development Institute
Participate in LDI daylong training, which will occur in July 2013, and be hosted by the Asian American Psychological Association at its annual convention in Honolulu (prior to the APA convention).
Receive two hours of individual and/or triadic mentoring per month for one year.
Work with a primary mentor from SCP and a secondary mentor from another CNPAAEMI organization.
Participate in regular facilitated discussions with other fellows throughout the year which will be led by a mentor on a specific leadership topic.
Develop a personal leadership plan for a project addressing a current issue in the host organization with the help and assistance of a mentor.
Produce final report outlining activities in the LDI and progress on leadership plan; communicate LDI experience with the SCP executive committee.
Serve as a mentor to fellows in subsequent cohorts.

Criteria for participation
A racial or ethnic minority early career professional (seven years or less since doctorate)
Currently an SCP member.
Interested in and committed to making a professional impact through leadership, and have some vision for such impact.
Interested in leadership skills and pursuing leadership positions in SCP.
Available to attend the daylong training in July 2013 at the AAPA Annual Convention in Honolulu (prior to the APA convention).
Committed to complete a leadership project and provide a report to SCP.

A letter of interest. In this letter, please tell us a little bit about yourself and discuss why you would like to participate in the LDI. Indicate specifically what you would hope to gain from the LDI experience and how you would see yourself utilizing the LDI experience in your future work as a leader in SCP. Please also briefly discuss current/previous leadership experiences you have had and what you learned from them.
A current curriculum vita.
A letter of recommendation that specifically addresses your potential as a leader, particularly within SCP, your interpersonal skills, and your ability to complete projects successfully in a timely manner.
