The Public Interest Directorate works to advance psychology as a means of promoting human welfare. Programs within the Public Interest Directorate address issues related to aging; AIDS; children, youth and families; disability; ethnic minorities; lesbians, gay men and bisexuals; violence prevention; public interest policy advocacy; and women. The Directorate is also home to the APA Minority Fellowship Program.

Some of the publications listed are only available online. Others are available by mail. Publications "Available online" or "Available online only" can be downloaded from our web site. All other publications are available by mail and can be ordered free of charge or for a small fee. A collaborative product of the American Psychological Association and American Bar Association Working Group on Capacity Assessment in Older Adults. APA Bridging The Gap On Aging-Related Issues. (2002).  Reprint: DiGilio, D. & Levitt, N. APA bridging the gap on aging-related issues. Professional Psychology: Research & Practice, 33(5), 443-445. Past and present efforts of the American Psychological Association related to aging issues are described.

Elder Abuse and Neglect: In Search of Solutions.  A brochure written for consumers, but useful to anyone who wants to know more about elder abuse. Includes information about types of abuse and neglect, what causes it, and where to go for help. (Available online only)

Judicial Determination of Capacity of Older Adults in Guardianship Proceedings.  (2006). A collaborative product of the American Psychological Association and American Bar Association and the National College of Probate Judges, this handbook provides practical tools for capacity determination and strives to improve communication between judges and healthcare professionals. Psychologists Make a Significant Difference: Psychology and Aging. (2004)   This brochure outlines the research, practice and educational endeavors of geropsychologists on behalf of older adults. Protecting Our Children from Abuse and Neglect. (1997)  This public education pamphlet was written for parents, teachers, relatives, and those who care for children. Report of the APA Task Force on Advertising and Children. Diversity Needs of Academic Setting (DiNAS) Manual. (April 1997)   Developed by Drs. Diane Adams and Victor De La Cancela for the APA National Institute of General Medical Science Project on "Expanding the pipeline for ethnic minorities in biomedical research..." The Manual includes six surveys targeted towards various campus constituencies and requesting statistical, objective, and attitudinal data. The experimental instrument enables postsecondary institutions to identify existing strengths for and barriers to diversity and effective ethnic minority recruitment, retention, and training. $5.00.
Handbook for Increasing Ethnic Minority Participation In State Psychological Associations and APA Divisions.   The purpose of this handbook is to encourage the creativity and goodwill that must accompany any effort to increase ethnic minority representation and participation. The English-Only Movement: Myths, Reality, and Implications for Psychology. (AP, Feb 1991, Vol. 46, No. 2, 120-130)  This American Psychologist reprint is an excellent review of literature on this topic. Hate Crimes Today: An Age-Old Foe in Modern Dress. (Revised 2005)   This booklet is a joint project of the APA Public Interest Government Relations Office and Public Communications Office, in conjunction with the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues. 1998, revised 2005. This booklet offers answers to frequently asked questions about hate crimes based on psychological research and makes policy recommendations.
Can-Or Should-America Be Color-Blind? (1997)   Psychological Research Reveals Fallacies in a Color-Blind Response to Racism. This booklet prepared by APA's Public Interest Government Relations Office reports psychological research findings presented at a Congressional briefing and addresses such topics as color-blindness, how stereotypes shape self-esteem and performance, and the powerful change agent of inter-group cooperation. 8 pages.
