  • APA Consolidated Meetings in Washington, D.C., Oct. 5-7, 2012
The Committee on Socioeconomic Status (CSES) meets for a second time this year. Official CSES Monitors from state psychological associations or APA divisions receive advance copies of our committee meeting agendas and subsequent agenda minutes. Monitors provide comments and/or suggestions for committee activities and programs. If you are interested in serving as a CSES monitor, please contact us.

  • International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, Oct. 17, 2012
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (also known as “World Poverty Day”) was adopted by the United Nations in 1992 in an effort to “honor the victims of extreme poverty, violence, and hunger” and to “devote the day to presenting and promoting, as appropriate in the national context, concrete activities with regard to the eradication of poverty and destitution.”

  • In 2011, OSES recognized World Poverty Day by leading a 17-day Twitter campaign up to Oct. 17 highlighting domestic and international poverty and health issues. We look forward to recognizing World Poverty Day with CSEWS, APA members and the general public this year.

  • National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 10-18, 2012
Co-sponsored by the National Coalition for the Homeless and the Student Campaign against Hunger & Homelessness each November, National Hunger & Homelessness Week highlights and increases awareness of food insecurity and homelessness.

  • In addition to a week-long Twitter campaign in 2011, OSES hosted a brown bag luncheon for APA staff with two guest speakers from the National Coalition of Homelessness’ Speaker Bureau. The speakers discussed their personal experiences being homeless in Washington D.C. Staff then walked from the APA offices to D.C. Central Kitchen to meet with DC. Central Kitchen staff and to learn about their mission and work. OSES is currently planning recognition activities for 2012 National Hunger & Homelessness Week.
