Call for Nominations: Committee on Socioeconomic Status

The Committee on Socioeconomic Status (CSES) is pleased to invite nominations for membership on the Committee to serve three year terms beginning in January 2008. CSES anticipates two vacancies in 2008. Nominations are accepted from individuals, APA Committees, Boards, and Divisions, as well as self-nominations.

The mission of the Committee on SES is to further the major purpose of the APA – “to advance psychology as a science and a profession and as a means of promoting health, education and human welfare”—by ensuring that issues of SES receive the full attention of the Association.

The Committee will identify and act as a catalyst in the Association’s efforts to address issues of SES and promote appropriate attention to SES in psychological research and practice. In this regard, the Committee shall: (a) collect information and documentation concerning SES; (b) promote scientific understanding of the roles of poverty and SES in health, education, and human welfare; (c) develop approaches to the application of psychology that take into account the effects of SES on psychological development and well being; and (d) advocate for social policy that will alleviate or reduce the disparities between SES groups.

Nominees are being sought who have expertise in psychological issues related to public health, social class and SES inequalities; have conducted research that aided in the scientific understanding of the roles of SES/social class in psychology; have developed approaches to the application of psychology taking into account the effects of SES on psychological development and well-being in children and/or adults. The Committee is particularly interested in representatives of the practice and education communities. The Committee has a strong commitment to full diversity in representation.

CSES members are required to attend two committee meetings each year in Washington, DC, with expenses reimbursed by APA. Nominees should ensure they can attend all committee meetings. In 2008, the meetings are scheduled for March 28-30th and September 19-21st. Committee members also work on CSES priorities between meetings and will be expected to participate in regular committee conference calls. In addition, CSES members are encouraged to attend CSES related events at APA Convention if possible, though expenses cannot be reimbursed.

Each nomination packet must be complete, and include the following information. Failure to adhere to this requirement by the submission deadline may jeopardize the acceptance of your submission.

  • A letter from the nominee indicating willingness to serve on CSES
  • Brief description of the nominee’s qualification
  • Current Curriculum Vitae

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS AUGUST 27, 2007

Please send all nominations and supporting materials to the attention of Keyona King-Tsikata, Public Interest Directorate, 750 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002-4242. Electronic submissions are encouraged and may be sent to Keyona King-Tsikata .
