I. PREAMBLE

In 1991, The Board of Directors of the American Psychological Association (APA) appointed a Task Force on the Changing Gender Composition of Psychology. The charge to this task force was to examine shifts in the gender composition of the discipline and to identify the implications of these shifts for psychology. To carry out this charge, the task force reviewed available data to determine the nature and magnitude of the increased representation of women in the discipline. To better understand the factors underlying these changes, the subcommittee utilized the framework of Reskin and Roos (1990). Their framework, rather than targeting personalogical variables, focuses on identifying more macro-level societal shifts and has proved constructive in examining the increased participation of women in other occupations.
