Mission Overview
The Work, Stress, and Health Office promotes research, training, practice, and policy to:
- Examine the impact of the changing organization of work on stress, health, safety, and productivity in the workplace;
- Understand work stress and its impact on the well-being and productivity of workers;
- Explore organizational and behavioral interventions to reduce stress, illness, and injury in the workplace;
- Promote the use of the workplace to improve health protection and health promotion;
- Explore the interplay of work and family as it affects stress and health;
- Explore the impact of changing workforce demographics (e.g., aging workers, increasing proportion of ethnic and racial minorities and women) on health and safety in the workplace; and
- Build collaborative partnerships between psychology, industry, labor, and federal agencies to reduce stress and health and safety risks in the workplace.
Specific Initiatives
Since 1989, APA’s work, stress, and health initiative, in collaboration with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), has convened six conferences on work, stress, and health. Planning is underway for a seventh conference in 2008.
The Journal of Occupational Health Psychology (information available at http://www.apa.org/journals/ocp.html), published by APA, and a training program on occupational health psychology, housed within APA’s Science Directorate, are out-growths of the office’s collaboration with NIOSH.
