Results of the Committee on Women in Psychology 1996 Questionnaire: State/Regional Psychological Associations

ATTACHMENT A

STATE REGIONAL PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION RESULTS

For the purpose of this questionnaire, CWP defined state regional psychological associations as organized psychological associations representing a region, county, or chapter within a state, that elects a Board of Directors and holds regular meetings. The response rate for the state regional psychological associations was 46% with 73 out of 160 responding. Fifty-six of the questionnaires (77%) were filled out by the association presidents. State regional psychological associations responding to the questionnaire ranged in size from 15 to 1,450 members. A number of the respondents (12%) indicated that they did not have information available on the number/percentage of women members. Based on the information provided, the percentage of female members ranged from lows of 7% in the San Diego (CA) Psychological Association, 15% in the Suffolk County (NY) Psychological Association and 20% in the Panhandle (TX) Psychological Association to highs of 68% in both the Pasadena (CA) Psychological Association and the Middlesex County (NJ) Psychological Association, 70% in the Nueces County (TX) Psychological Association, and approximately 90% in New Mexico State Psychological Association Chapter II. Approximately 60 of the state regional psychological associations (82%) have more than 50% female members.
