The Gates Millennium Scholars Program, administered by the United Negro College Fund, will provide scholarships and fellowships for outstanding low-income African-American, Native American, Hispanic American, and Asian American students to attend the undergraduate and graduate institutions of their choice. The UNCF gratefully acknowledges the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for its support of this initiative.
The Gates Millennium Scholars Program will enhance access to postsecondary education. Awards will supplement Scholar's existing financial aid and thus eliminate the need for them to borrow significan amounts of monies or spend excessive time at paid jobs, either of which can be a barrier to completion of a college degree.
Applicants for a Gates Millennium Scholars Program must:
-be a citizen of the United States;
-have a minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale;
-be a high school senior applying to an accredited college or university for the academic year 2000-2001; or a college student planning to continue undergraduate study in academic year 2000-20001; or a college senior or college graduate enrolled or about to enroll in graduate school for study in academic year 2000-2001. Graduate students must be enrolled in a degree program in engineering, mathematics, science, education or library science;
-demonstrate significant financial need; and
-have demonstrated leadership commitment through participation in community service (i.e., mentoring/tutoring, volunteer work in social service organizations, and involvement in church initiatives), extracurricular activities (student government and athletics), or other activities that reflect leadership abilities.
Application materials will be available beginning November 1, 1999. An application form will be submitted with the nomination letter and other supporting materials. Applicants will also be required to submit a high school and/or college transcript, a personal statement, a family financial profile, and letter of recommendation, in addition to the nominating letter. All materials must be submitted by February 1, 2000.

Through this scholarship program the fund seeks to introduce a diverse group of undergraduate students to issues relating to philanthropy, volunteerism, and nonprofit organizations.

Women in Defense established this scholarship to encourage women to pursue careers related to the national security interests of the United States, and to provide development opportunities to women who are already working in national security fields. The scholarship program is intended to provide financial assistance to further educational objectives of individuals either employed or planning careers in this area.
