GECs facilitate the training of health professional faculty, students, and practitioners in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease, disability, and other health problems of the elderly by:

  • Improving the training of health professionals in geriatrics.
  • Providing geriatric residencies, traineeships and fellowships.
  • Developing and disseminating curricula on the treatment of health problems in elderly individuals.
  • Training and re-training faculty to provide instruction in geriatrics.
  • Supporting continuing education for health professionals who provide geriatric care.
  • Providing clinical geriatrics training in nursing homes, chronic and acute care hospitals, ambulatory care centers and senior centers

Since 1985, 375,000 health professionals have received training in geriatrics through the Centers. In FY 2004, a total of 47 GECs were funded for approximately $19,000,000. The FY 2005 grant competition has already taken place, check the link below for future updates on the FY 2006 competition.
