APA Supports Funding for the Institute of Education Sciences

APA recently signed on to a letter calling on Congress to support the highest possible appropriations for the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), one of the primary research arms of the Department of Education. The letter, signed by a number of associations with an interest in research, called on members of the Labor, HHS, Education Appropriations conference committee to support a $51.5 million increase above the fiscal year (FY) 2003 appropriated level as called for by both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Administration's FY 2004 Budget request. IES is currently funding research programs in areas such as cognition and student learning, reading comprehension and teacher quality. Additional funding is needed to support these areas as well as new competitions for field-initiated research. In FY 2003, IES received $447.96 million.
