Targeted Grassroots Strategy for FY 2010 GPE Appropriations

Over the past several months, the Education GRO staff has reached out to psychologists who live in states and districts of key Members of Congress in an effort to gain Congressional support for increased funding for the GPE Program.  This targeted grassroots strategy has included one-on-one meetings with key members and staff of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees.  In fact, scores of APA members took time from their busy schedules since the beginning of the year to come to Washington to urge Congressional Members or their staff to support $7 million FY2010 funding for GPE.   To highlight the importance of the GPE Program to underserved persons in their communities/district, hill meetings were then followed by phone calls, letters and email.  Education GRO staff contacted psychologists with psychology graduate programs and at training sites eligible for GPE grants in the states of key Members of Congress, urging them to weigh-in in support of a funding increase for the GPE Program, thereby demonstrating the depth of interest that exists for the GPE Program nation wide.
