The American Psychological Association (APA) represents the largest and most visible national presence advocating for psychology at the federal level. APA works closely with decision-makers on Capitol Hill and in federal agencies as they formulate legislation and regulations of interest to psychologists. APA Government Relations is comprised of advocacy staff across three APA directorates: Education, Public Interest, and Science.
The Education Government Relations Office seeks to increase federal support for psychology education and training and to promote the application of psychology to education and training.
The Public Interest Government Relations Office engages in shaping federal policy to promote psychology for the advancement of health, education, and human welfare.
The Science Government Relations Office advocates in multiple areas to influence policy decisions that advance and preserve the infrastructure of psychological science.
The APA Practice Organization (APAPO) is a separate 501(c)(6) organization and an affiliate of APA whose mission is to promote the professional interests of practicing psychologists in all settings through a wide range of activities. The APAPO Government Relations Office engages in legislative, regulatory, and grassroots advocacy on behalf of practicing psychologists and consumers of psychological services.
The Education Advocacy Trust is a functionally autonomous part of the 501(c)(6) organization established to support education advocacy issues.
