The Three E’s of DTV: Educating, Engaging and Entertaining

Panel from Digital Television: Sharpening the Focus on Children Briefing

OBJECTIVE: This panel will highlight current and innovative new practices in interactive educational television programming, explore the potential that the convergence of television and the Internet brings to children’s television and discuss ways to ensure that children benefit from the technological advances of digital television. How can the interactive capabilities of digital television be used to create compelling and enriched educational programming for children? What are the benefits and drawbacks of creating all-kids digital channels? How should the Children’s Television Act, which requires every commercial broadcast station to air three hours per week of educational and informational children’s programming, be applied to a digital television environment in which commercial stations can broadcast up to six channels simultaneously?

STRUCTURE: After a brief introduction of panelists, the moderator will ask one broad opening question of all panelists, which will provide an opportunity for quick opening statements. The moderator will then ask specific questions to individual panelists after which the discussion can open up to allow other panelists to join in or respond. Forty-five minutes of panel discussion will be followed by 20 minutes of audience Q&A.
