As reported earlier this month on this web page and also at
the Convention, APA Education advocacy staff, with the support of APA Members,
secured the support of the Senate Labor-Health and Human Services-Education
Subcommittee and its Chair, Tom Harkin (D-IA) to maintain the GPE Program in FY
2003, and also add $3 million for graduate training in geropsychology. We are
very excited about this significant "win" in the Senate Subcommittee
and are now anxiously awaiting the next round when the Senate Labor-Health and Human Services-Education
bill (S.2766)
is brought to the Senate Floor.
In the meantime, we are also waiting for the House to draft
its Labor-Health and Human Services-Education bill. Unfortunately, the House
Leadership is trying to force the House appropriators to use the President’s
budget of $130 billion – that is $6.4 billion less than the Senate bill and $9
billion less than what is needed to maintain important domestic programs
including the Graduate Psychology Education program. The House Labor-Health and
Human Services-Education Appropriations Subcommittee is expected to consider the
President’s bill or their own some time the week of September 9th.
