On October 29, 2004 APA member Jim Campbell, PhD, Director of Counseling Services at the University of Rhode Island at Kingston, presented Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) with a special award from the American Psychological Association’s Board of Educational Affairs. The award honored Senator Reed for his unwavering commitment to addressing the growing need for mental and behavioral health services on our nation's college campuses.

Senator Reed has been a long-time champion and advocate for psychology and has demonstrated extraordinary leadership with the introduction of S. 2215, the Campus Care and Counseling Act, which was incorporated into the final version of the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act and signed into law by President Bush on October 21st. In addition to receiving the award, the Senator Reed also had the opportunity to tour the University's Counseling Center, and to meet and speak with Dr. Campbell and other counseling center directors from around Rhode Island about the needs of students.

Other Special APA Awards

Representative Danny Davis (D-IL-7), co-sponsor in the House for the Campus Care and Counseling Act, also received a special award at the Education Advocacy Breakfast held during the APA Convention in Hawaii. In addition, special awards are to be presented in the coming months to Senators Clinton (D-NY), DeWine (R-OH) and Smith (R-OR), and Congressman Osborne (R-NE-3), who all played a vital role in getting a number of provisions from the Campus Care and Counseling Act included in the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act.

Education advocacy staff will work with psychologists from the districts and states of these Members to organize special events where the awards will be presented.
