The
Honorable Ralph Regula
Chairman,
House Labor, Health and Human Services, and
Education
Appropriations Subcommittee
2358
Rayburn House Office Building
Washington,
DC 20515
Dear Chairman
Regula:
The undersigned members of the
Friends of NICHD, a coalition of nearly 100 organizations that support the work
of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), applaud and urge your continued support for a 15% increase for the
National Institutes of Health, and encourage a commensurate increase for NICHD.
This increase for NIH will complete the bipartisan goal of doubling the NIH
budget and ensure that NICHD is able to meet its own research goals.
Our
organizations represent scientists, physicians, health care providers, patients,
and parents concerned with the health and welfare of women, children, families,
and people with disabilities. Scientific
breakthroughs supported by the NIH and NICHD specifically serve to prevent and
treat many of the nation’s most devastating health problems, such as infant
mortality and low birthweight, birth defects, developmental disabilities,
pediatric AIDS, and the reproductive health
of women throughout their lifespans.
NICHD
is also disseminating the latest research findings to the public on diseases
such as autism and the results of decades of parenting research.
Additionally, NICHD has supported research on sudden infant death
syndrome, dietary supplement use in women,
childhood obesity, fragile X syndrome, adult and family literacy and
critical demographic social and behavioral research. Sustained public investment
in NICHD provides a foundation of scientific knowledge about human physical,
intellectual, social, and emotional development that has profoundly improved
public health.
We
deeply appreciate the consistent interest and support Congress has shown for the
NIH and NICHD. As
your committee moves forward on the Labor, HHS Appropriations bill, we urge you
to provide NIH and NICHD with funding levels that meet current needs for
addressing health issues across the lifespan.
Thank you in advance for your consideration of our views and we look
forward to continuing to work with you on these critical issues.
Sincerely,
