The 2003 Monitoring the Future Study shows a teen drug abuse
decline of 11% for drug use by 8th, 10th, and 12th grade students over the last
two years. Yet according to the 2002 National Survey on Drug Abuse and Health
Report, only 18.2 percent of all Americans over the age of 12 needing treatment
received treatment. According to the National Institutes of Health, the negative
health consequences of drug, tobacco and alcohol use cost society an estimated
$484 billion a year. In turn, Congress must bear the negative consequences and
costs of funding expensive criminal justice, and welfare and health services to
counter the destruction of addiction. The briefing will share positive
approaches to evidenced-based treatment and prevention services.
Speaker:
Nora Volkow, MD, Director of the National Institute on Drug
