The Friends of NICHD, a coalition of nearly 100 organizations that support the extraordinary work of the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development, recommends that Congress provide at least $1. 284 billion for NICHD in FY 2003.
  • The most profound measure of our national strength lies in the health of our children, the well-being of our families, and the safety of our daily lives. NICHD was created with this vision in mind – a vision that goes beyond treating and preventing disease and disability to encompass the hope that every individual has the opportunity to achieve his or her full potential.

  • NICHD has devoted its resources to ensuring that every individual is born healthy and wanted, that women suffer no adverse consequences of the reproductive process, and that all children have the opportunity for healthy and productive lives unhampered by disease or disability.

  • No other NIH Institute directly addresses the broad array of intertwined scientific issues addressed by NICHD every day.

  • Sustained public investment in NICHD provides a foundation of scientific knowledge about human physical, intellectual, social, and emotional development that has profoundly improved public health and reduced human suffering.

  • An appropriation of $1.284 billion, which represents a 15 percent increase, in FY 2003 will ensure that NICHD is able to continue to identify breakthroughs that are on the brink of discovery.

  • An appropriation of $1.284 billion for NICHD in FY 2003 is a sound public investment that will produce new insights into human development and solutions to health problems for the world, the nation, and the families that live in your town.
