Transition Youth With Serious Mental Illness: Congressional Briefing

PI-GRO helped organize a standing room only congressional briefing July 25, 2008, on Transition Youth with Serious Mental Illness, sponsored by Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA), Sen. Gordon Smith (R-OR), and Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT).

  • More than 3 million youth in the United States with serious mental illness are transitioning into adulthood.

  • Unfortunately, society fails these youth, placing a tremendous health and financial burden on countless families.

The Healthy Transition Act of 2008 currently before Congress, would establish planning and implementation grants for states to develop statewide coordination plans to assist adolescents and young adults with a serious mental health disorder and would establish a committee of federal partners to coordinate service programs at the federal level, as well as provide technical assistance to states.
