As of January 1, 1997, the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) is mandating the use of newly-revised ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes for certain mental disorders on Medicare claims submitted by providers. Other carriers for health insurance programs that mandate the use of ICD-9-CM may follow HCFA's lead in requiring use of the new codes.

The following table lists the new codes effective 1/1/97 along with the corresponding DSM-IV and ICD-9-CM coding manual descriptors and the former codes used for these diagnoses.
