Psychological testing and neuropsycho-logical testing service codes are being consolidated into a new section of the CPT 1996 manual entitled, Central Nervous Systems Assessments/Tests (e.g. neuro-cognitive, mental status, speech testing). The new codes, effective January 1, 1996, of particular interest to psychologists appear in the table below.

The new section containing these testing codes follows the Neurology and Neuromuscular Procedures section of CPT 1996.

According to Antonio Puente, Ph.D., APA s representative to the AMA CPT Health Care Professionals Advisory Committee, the modification is simply a matter of changing the location and numbering of the codes, which formerly were dispersed throughout the manual. Consolidating these assessment codes into one section should enhance the organization of the CPT manual, Dr. Puente said.

The APA Practice Directorate and state psychological associations will monitor implementation of the new code numbers closely and assist with necessary troubleshooting.
