1. What journals are covered in PsycARTICLES?

PsycARTICLES covers journals published by APA, the Canadian Psychological Association, Hogrefe Publishing Group and APA's Educational Publishing Foundation. These journals are available in full text. View the PsycARTICLES Coverage List.

2. Is each issue of the journal available cover to cover? Does PsycARTICLES include the table of contents, letters to the editor(s), and errata notifications?

Currently, each article in the journal is in PsycARTICLES, as well as errata and letters to the editor. Tables of contents, ads, and administrative material (editorial boards, instructions to authors, and so forth) will be added in the future.

3. Are all the articles cited in PsycINFO also in PsycARTICLES?

No. PsycINFO contains abstracts from more than 2,000 journals published by many different publishers. PsycARTICLES provides full-text for a select number of journals published by APA, the Canadian Psychological Association, Hogrefe Publishing Group and the Educational Publishing Foundation.

4. How much does yearly access to PsycARTICLES cost?

That depends on whether you're an APA Member or Affiliate or a library or other institution.

Libraries and other institutions: See the PsycARTICLES Pricing for Institutions page for pricing information.

APA members: Visit the APA Electronic Products page for pricing and order information.

Non-APA members: Visit the APA Gold Homepage for pricing and order information.

5. How do I get PsycARTICLES?

Libraries and other institutions: You can license PsycARTICLES from APA or through another vendor. Please visit the PsycARTICLES Licensing page for more information.

APA members: Sign up for yearly access to PsycARTICLES and PsycINFO on your October Journal Order Form, purchase access online from the APA Electronic Products page, or call 1-800-374-2721 to order by phone.

Non-APA members: If you want to purchase yearly access to PsycARTICLES, go to the APA Gold Homepage to order online, or call 1-800-374-2722. If you need just a few articles, you can purchase them through PsycARTICLES Direct.

6. What vendors offer PsycARTICLES?

PsycARTICLES is available now through APA on PsycNET and from CSA, EBSCO, Elsevier on ScienceDirect, Hogrefe Publishing Group, OCLC, Ovid, and ProQuest.

7. What format are the articles in PsycARTICLES available in?

Articles published from 1985 forward are in both PDF and HTML format. Articles published prior to 1985 are available only in PDF format. All PDFs are searchable.

8. Do the articles in PsycARTICLES appear in the database before or after the print copy of the journal goes out?

The electronic version of the article is usually about one week behind the mailing of the print because there is a three-step process: production up to the point of printing, coding for electronic delivery, and final release by the various vendors. APA is working on reducing that lag time.

9. Is PsycARTICLES cross-linked with any outside databases or journals?

Yes, as a member of CrossRef, APA deposits Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for all of its primary content and includes all available DOIs in PsycINFO. Therefore, PsycINFO records include a DOI for each article in PsycARTICLES. These serve as linking mechanisms between bibliographic databases and the electronic full-text they describe.

For articles published from 1985 forward, DOI links are also added to citations. Further, APA has agreements with some vendors and publishers to link into PsycARTICLES as distributed on the APA system. Check with your vendor to see what linking they provide from secondary and other primary databases to PsycARTICLES.

10. What search options are available?

Contact the other vendors to find out how to locate articles through their systems.

If you access PsycARTICLES on the PsycNET platform, you have three options:

  • search the PsycINFO record for each article, taking advantage of PsycINFO's indexing
  • search the full-text of the article or the references or both
  • browse the journal tables of contents

If you also search PsycINFO on the PsycNET platform, you can link to full-text in PsycARTICLES from PsycINFO.

11. If our school has a site license, can I put articles from PsycARTICLES on electronic reserve for courses?

Yes, this is allowed. Section 3.7 of the APA license is included below:

3.7 The Licensee may incorporate parts of the Licensed Materials in electronic course packs and electronic reserve collection for the use by Authorized Users in a particular course of instruction at the Licensee’s institution, but not for printed (hard copy) or CD-ROM versions of Course Packs, Commercial Use, or Re-sale. Each such item shall carry appropriate acknowledgment of the source, listing title and author of the extract, title and author of the work, and the publisher. Access to stated materials are to be controlled by security measures, such as IP authentication or the use of authorized passwords. Access shall be made available only to Authorized Users. The Licensee shall delete copies of when they are no longer used for a particular course. Course packs in non-electronic non-print perceptible form, such as audio or Braille, may also be offered to Authorized Users who are visually impaired. Permission for other reproduction should be sought from the Publisher, via the APA Permissions Office. This clause pertains only to databases containing full text. It does not apply for PsycINFO.

12. What kinds of administrative functions, such as OPAC connections and usage reports, are available for libraries that license PsycARTICLES?

These modules are provided by the vendor. If your access is directly through APA, go to APA's Institutional Access Reference Desk to see URLs for each of the journals that can be added to your online public access catalog. Your contact person for the license will have a password to access usage statistics. If you use another vendor for PsycARTICLES, contact them for information about usage statistics.

13. Is PsycARTICLES COUNTER Compliant?

Yes. COUNTER is a standard for reporting online usage statistics. APA is fully compliant with Counter Release 2. For more information visit the COUNTER Compliance page in the Librarian's Resource Center.

14. What are APA's plans for adding retrospective articles to the database?

APA released the backfiles (1894–1984) in March 2006. They were made available on the PsycNET platform in June 2006. If you are unable to access the historical content, contact your vendor or check the Librarian's Resource Center's Vendor Reload Schedule. It may take vendors some time to get the records onto their systems.

15. If we subscribe to PsycARTICLES, but can't maintain our subscription to it, what can we keep?

See APA Archiving and Access Policy for Electronic Databases in the Librarian's Resource Center.

16. If we subscribe to PsycARTICLES, can we use the content in our school course packs?

Yes, you can use them in electronic course packs and electronic reserve collections, but not in print. See APA Policy on Course Packs and Electronic Reserve in the Librarian's Resource Center.
