APA is dedicated to disseminating information about books published on psychological topics through two outlets
- PsycCRITIQUES, an online database of reviews of books in psychology and of popular films with psychological relevance
- PsycINFO, a database that provides citations, abstracts, subject indexing, and tables of contents for English-language books published worldwide
PsycINFO staff evaluates thousands of books each year to add nearly 2,000 titles to the database. Abstractors create separate records for each chapter of an edited book.
Note: PsycCRITIQUES replaced the print journal Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books as of December 31, 2004.
If you are a publisher and want to know which of your books have been added to PsycINFO within the last year, send a message to
PsycINFO Coverage, and we'll e-mail or fax you the list.
Please include the following information in your message:
- Subject: Publisher Title List
- Publisher name
- Contact information (include fax and e-mail)
- Imprint
- Whether you want the list faxed or e-mailed to you
In selecting books for coverage, PsycINFO staff examine psychological relevance, content focus, quality, and availability. The PsycINFO database covers a variety of book types. PsycINFO covers books published worldwide but only those in English.
A publication that includes any of the following may be psychologically relevant
- Books summarizing psychological research
- Books detailing application of psychological knowledge
- Books covering any and all subfields of psychology
- Books on psychological topics for clients or the general public
- Non-psychology content of interest to psychologists in different subfields (for example, statistics for use in research design and empirical analysis, anatomical summaries of different organ systems of the human body for health psychologists, and so forth)
- Content in related fields that has psychological or behavioral implications
Relevant books may focus on the following:
- Individuals
- Groups
- Social issues
- Normal behavior
- Abnormal behavior
- Clinical treatment and services
- Underlying physiological mechanisms
- Experimental methodology
- Theory development and testing
- Applications in non-clinical settings
Quality books include the following attributes:
- Carefully prepared content presentation
- Marks of scholarship such as
- Logical organization of table of contents and of individual chapters
- Substantive empirical or theoretical basis indicated
- Current references to substantive, quality publications
- Publication by a reputable society or commercial press (rather than a vanity press or self-publication)
- Durable physical construction
Books must be readily available to the public. Factors considered include the following:
- An ISBN
- Published in the current or previous calendar year
- Actively offered for sale
- Available through libraries, retail outlets, distributors, or the publisher
