Ohio v. Akron Center for Reproductive Health, Inc., 497 U.S. 502 Brief Filed: 9/89
Court: Supreme Court of the United States
Year of Decision: 1990

Issue: Whether an Ohio statute which prohibited a physician from performing an abortion upon a minor unless notice was provided to one of the minor's parents was unconstitutional

Index Topics: Abortion (parental notification)

Facts: This case was a companion case to Hodgson v. State of Minnesota, 853 F.2d 1452 (1988). APA filed a joint brief for both cases.

APA's Position: See Hodgson v. State of Minnesota.

Result: The US Supreme Court struck down the two-parent notification requirement. The majority cited the APA brief for the propositions that one-parent families are common and state law often allows a minor parent to consent to health care for her child.
