WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 15, 2006 — The PsycINFO unit of the American Psychological Association (APA) has appointed Janice L. Fleming to the position of Director of Business and Planning. In this new key management position, she will serve as deputy to the Senior Director of PsycINFO, Linda Beebe, and will undertake such responsibilities as directing all budgeting and financial activities, developing metrics and models for evaluating the internal operations of APA's electronic publishing programs, and managing the PsycINFO front office, including rights and permissions.
"We're delighted that APA and its customers will now be able to benefit from Jan's distinguished and comprehensive range of skills and experience in scholarly publishing," said Ms. Beebe. "She will bring to APA new capabilities that will be vital to our efforts to remain at the forefront of electronic publishing operations."
Ms. Fleming comes to APA from Cadmus Professional Communications, the world's largest provider of content management and production services to scientific, technical, and medical (STM) journal publishers. As Vice President for Planning and Development at Cadmus for the past eight years, she spearheaded such development programs as Rapid Review® and Rapid Production Manager. Previously, she was Director of Market Development at Cadmus.
Before joining Cadmus, Ms. Fleming was Director of Publications for the Optical Society of America, leading a program that included seven scholarly journals and more than 100 books. She has also managed the American Chemical Society's Manuscript Office and produced and evaluated computer-assisted chemistry courses. She began her career as a research chemist and author.
Ms. Fleming has been very active in the publishing industry, serving as president of the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) in the late 1990s and on various committees in SSP and the Council for Science Editors.
