CHICAGO – The American Psychological Association (APA) announced today the debut of a new Web site to support librarians at institutions using APA databases, print books and journals, and related products.

The APA Librarian's Resource Center, now online at www.apa.org/librarians, provides a wealth of detailed information about APA's PsycINFO®, PsycARTICLES®, PsycBOOKS™, PsycEXTRA®, and PsycCRITIQUES™ databases, as well as other APA electronic resources such as APA-Style Helper, the APA Online Membership Directory, Graduate Study in Psychology Online, and more. It also provides links to information about other APA resources such as the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association and the Concise Rules of APA Style. The site will also integrate Information from the library's perspective about APA's print journals and books.

The site is designed to meet the needs of librarians through all phases of their work with APA resources, from initial evaluation of products for purchasing decisions to promoting products to library constituents, managing database installations, and training fellow librarians, faculty, and students on best search practices. Available resources include:

  • Basic fact sheets on the content and file structure of each APA database
  • Brief and detailed product descriptions
  • MARC records to support cataloging of full-text documents available in APA databases
  • Samples of APA's licensing terms and conditions
  • Point-of-use search guides and a detailed, narrative user guide

"We created the Librarian's Resource Center in response to many customer requests for a centralized access point for all publications to help institutional users get the maximum value from APA products," said Linda Beebe, Senior Director, PsycINFO. "And we view this new site as a dynamic resource that will evolve continually based on input librarians."

About APA Databases

APA Databases are leading information resources in the behavioral sciences. The PsycINFO® abstract database provides access to international professional literature in psychology and such related disciplines as neuroscience, medicine, psychiatry, social work, nursing, sociology, business, education, pharmacology, and physiology, with comprehensiveness and quality unmatched by any A&I database or federated search resource. Providing both a deep backfile and timely access to current research through weekly updates, PsycINFO spans the history of the discipline, from the origins of psychology in the nineteenth century to the cutting-edge findings of today's behavioral sciences. PsycARTICLES®, an essential complement to PsycINFO, is a one-stop source for electronic access to the full text of articles from APA's authoritative, peer-reviewed scholarly journals. PsycBOOKS™ is a full-text collection of chapters from authored and edited scholarly volumes published by APA, as well as a selection of classic works in psychology from other publishers. PsycEXTRA® is a database of the gray literature in psychology and related behavioral fields, providing access to relevant material published outside the traditional peer reviewed journal or scholarly book. PsycCRITIQUES™ is a unique electronic periodical delivering 15-20 reviews weekly of current professional psychology books, as well as reviews from a psychological perspective of films and trade books.
